TEACH US Oscarville…
Step into a celebration of our heritage and a reckoning with the past. On Saturday, February 17th, 2024, take a journey with us through time and culture as TEACH US Oscarville reveals the hidden stories of Forsyth County in 1912. In partnership with visionary television and film producer Bob Mackey and esteemed Criminal Justice Professor & historian Joshua Byrd, this event is more than just history—it's a promise of empowerment, healing, and a collective vow to learn from our shared history.
Our goal is that everyone in attendance will feel the heartbeat of "We are Oscarville, collectively and individually," resonating through the building as TEACH US Oscarville becomes a sacred space for honoring our roots, confronting the scars of historical injustices, and paying homage to the resilience of Black History. Guest will have an opportunity to step into the past with Joshua Byrd's TEACH US 360, an immersive exhibit offering a firsthand glimpse into the lives of those who fled Oscarville in 1912, forging new paths filled with courage and strength. They will also see artifacts that breathe life into our ancestors' stories, creating a journey of connection and understanding.
But the experience doesn't end with history—it blossoms into an explosion of art and expression. Special guest artists Cecil Bernard and DeMeria SeGuan will breathe life into canvases, drawing inspiration from TEACH US Oscarville, Black History Month, and the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights. Educator, writer, and poet Dr. Curtis L. Todd will be present along with his an original work titled "Come and Gather: Memory, Trauma, and Lessons of Oscarville," offering a poignant reflection on our shared journey.
And the rhythm of our heritage will fill the air as singer and songwriter Alexis Lavada serenades us with melodies that echo through time, capturing the spirit of those who fled Oscarville in 1912. Saxophonist, writer, and producer DeWayne Martine will transport us with melodies steeped in the essence of Oscarville, while the Breneau University Department of Dance interprets the rich tapestry of freedom, human and civil rights, and the vibrant history of our people.
With Bob Mackey's captivating visual storytelling and Joshua Byrd's immersive TEACH US 360 exhibit, TEACH US Oscarville becomes more than an event—it becomes a living testament to our resilience and vibrancy. Reserve your seat now and join us as we honor the voices of our ancestors, shaping a future that celebrates the colorful tapestry of the African American experience. Don't miss out on this transformative journey. #TEACHUSOscarville #HistoricalExploration #ReserveYourSeatNow
